I'm planning to make a few scarves and mittens for the the ladies at my cotillion this coming Christmas and I need to start now and was wondering what size of mitten would be best for an adult. I know it can vary depending on the person, but what's the average size? I want to make sure they're comfortable and practical. Any suggestions?

Wow, that's so sweet of you!!

I say medium is the average size, that's like a palm circumference of about 7.5 to 8.5 inches, a hand length of 7 to 7.5 inches.

Also consider your yarn choice and refer to the size chart of your chosen pattern!

If it is for a summer cotillion you may want to look into the #10 cotton yarn on a ball and small crochet hooks so it will be light and not too hot while dancing.

For adult women it should be around 7" to 8" around the palm and 10" long. It's gonna fit comfy and not be too tight. You're so kind and I hope you are blessed more.

Make sure to use warm and soft yarns like wool blends or acrylic for comfort and easy care. And here's a tip: use a ribbon around the cuff, that way they can stay snug.

What a great idea for the cotillion gifts! It seems like a medium size, somewhere between 7.5 and 8.5 inches in palm circumference, would fit most adults pretty well. I really like the suggestion of using soft, warm yarn and tying a ribbon to keep the cuffs nice and snug. Do you have a specific type of yarn in mind? And are you thinking about knitting or crocheting?

For adult mittens, a common average size to aim for is about 9" (23 cm) in length from wrist to fingertip and around 4.5" (11.5 cm) wide at the palm, which fits most women comfortably. If you want to be safe, making them slightly roomy or stretchy fabric helps with fit and you could consider knitting or sewing a few different sizes, like small and medium... to cover most guests.
