My best friend is having her baby this coming May and looking to crochet baby blanket for her firstborn. Also, how long did it take for you to finish 1? Any tips and recommendations for a newbie will be greatly appreciated.

I made a crochet baby blanket for my cousin last month. it took me about two weeks to finish. start with a simple pattern and use soft yarn. you may practice basic stitches first. :D

I agree with @PhantomInferno88 that something simple and soft will be nice. It is best to use a more closed stitch if the blanket is next to the baby and is for daily use. That is to keep little fingers and toes from being caught in an open stitch. If the blanket is for special occasions and you have more practice, something with a more open design would be lovely.

You can go with a berry stitch pattern since it's easy to make and looks so cute. For me it took 3 days to make it but it really depends on how much free time you have, how fast you are etc. However, if you want something simple that won't take a lot of time then berry stitch definitely.
