will washing it shrink?

i knit a hat for my buddy but it's too big. he wants it snug on his head and i checked the fit on him a few times while making it. i knew it was a bit large but thought i could shrink it down. now it looks kinda like a mushroom not awful just not right. i made one for myself tossed it in the dryer and it tightened up some. this one needs more help though.

you can try adding the hat in a hot water fot 1 to 15 minutes (not boiling)and then place it in the dryer at the highest heat setting or if its wool you can try felting it by washing it in a hot water with detergent but dont leave it for too long or it will shrink too much.

What is the fiber content of your yarn? That will make a difference in the amount of shrinkage that may happen with your yarn. Is your test hat and the baby hat made of the same fibers? Just something for you to check.

I'm durious about this. Haven't had the need for something, but it's a nice thing to know for the future. Would this process damage the fabric?

I was there! Try a warm soak and quick low-speed drying cycles if it's wool, and make sure to check it frequently. Heat won't do much to acrylic, so perhaps sew some elastic around the brim. Which yarn did you use?

Some had luck, but others didn't, so I would be very very very careful trying something like this
