How do you decide the hook size based on the thickness of the yarn? I know there are various sizes for both, but I don't know how to decide on the best combo for the best output.

Thicker yarn generally needs bigger hooks to avoid super tight stitches, while thinner yarn works best with smaller hooks for neat detail, go with down size so that you can achieve tighter, denser stitches, it's also about your personal tension, crochet tight, a bigger hook can help, and vice versa

When I first started, I just followed the hook size suggested on the yarn label, it's usually a safe match. Later I'd experiment: bigger hook for a looser, drapier fabric, smaller hook for tighter stitches and structure
